Freelance publishing services:

As you will likely have gathered from the pages on this website, I have a real passion for books, reading and the publishing industry in general.

My role as a freelance proofreader/copyeditor is to bring my passion to support you in your work, so together we can produce the best text possible.

Anyone who writes will tell you that no matter how much time, effort and dedication you put into a piece of copy, you can become too close to it and it becomes difficult to see the wood for the trees when it comes to spotting errors.

If you’ve invested your time in writing a book or a brochure, web content or even something as simple as a C.V., the best thing you can do before publishing is to seek an independent edit or proofread so you can be sure your writing makes the best first impression. That’s where I can help.

How I work (proofreading and copyediting)

As a freelance copyeditor/proofreader, my role is to check your work for clarity, consistency and errors. The one thing I will not do is rewrite your copy; I know from experience how much of your creativity has been invested in your writing and it is not my place or desire to change your work. Your writing is your voice and should remain so.

What I can offer is another eye and an independent viewpoint to make your work the best it can be. As a proofreader, I will carefully read your work and highlight any spelling or grammatical errors or inconsistencies (names that may be spelt differently; contents lists that don’t exactly match the chapter headings etc).

As a copyeditor I will take it a step further and will amend all of the above, along with checking for clarity and offering a reader’s viewpoint by raising any queries I think a potential reader may have.

Areas of speciality

My specialism is social history, particularly the medieval and Tudor eras, and especially stories from a female viewpoint, but my love of history means I have a broad knowledge and expertise. I studied classical civilisation for A-Level, I am a huge fan of the Regency period and I have taken courses on subjects as varied as Richard III, the Bronte sisters, medieval feasting and the history of witchcraft. I also have an interest in holistic wellbeing practices such as yoga, crystals, meditation etc.

Services

Copyediting

I am experienced in copyediting non-fiction titles and would love to help you with your latest project. I ask to see a sample chapter upfront so I can see what needs doing and be in a position to give you a quote for the work. To help you decide if I'm the right editor or proofreader for your project, I offer a free edit of a couple of pages, which is designed to show you how I work and to ensure we are all happy to proceed. As a published author myself, who has been through the process, I understand how precious your project is and believe this gives me an advantage of being able to edit both professionally and empathetically. So if you have some work that needs copyediting, I will be glad to help you with your project.

Please contact me below for rates.

Please note: copyediting is not the same as editing (sometimes referred to as content editing or developmental editing). A copyeditor will check for grammar, spelling, clarity, inconsistencies etc but their role is not to help you develop your text. A content editor or developmental editor’s job is to help you with your text development and to see the project as a whole, offering constructive advice throughout. Works of fiction typically require a content editor, who will work in a collaborative way with the writer to develop the story.

For non-fiction titles, I believe that developmental editing requires expertise in the subject to be able to deliver the best service. I am therefore happy to discuss any developmental editing that may be required for any non-fiction works set in the medieval and Tudor periods as this is my area of expertise. Please contact me to discuss.

Proofreading

As an avid reader, I will happily proofread any material, both fiction and non-fiction. My specialisms are mentioned above but over the years I have worked on many subjects from Catherine Carey to the land girls, and from thimbles to telepathy.

Please contact me below for rates and to discuss the material that you need proofreading.

Typesetting

I am experienced in typesetting using Adobe Indesign and Adobe Photoshop. If you are in need of some typesetting work, please contact me using the button below and I will be happy to discuss if I can be of help.

Editing, proofreading and typesetting for publishers

Are you looking for a reliable, accurate and friendly copyeditor or proofreader to work on a freelance basis.  I specialise in social history but I'm happy to consider any genre of non-fiction.
